Company Profile

Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CVS) celebrates 40 years of excellence in 2010 and can rightfully claim to be the longest established safari outfitter in South Africa. CVS was formed by Coenraad Vermaak in 1970 as a small “one man enterprise” when professional hunting was virtually unknown in South Africa.

The Vermaak hunting legacy began with Coenraad’s Grandfather, C M Vermaak back in the early 1900’s when an average hunting safari lasted 2 months. This legacy was passed through the generations and as a result Coenraad Vermaak Safaris is today family owned and run. Operating mainly in Natal and Zululand the enterprise grew into a small family business which slowly spread its wings throughout South Africa.

In 1972 Coenraad Vermaak co-founded a separate safari company known as Southern African Professional Hunters (Pty) Ltd (SAPH) and, in conjunction with CVS, SAPH grew into the largest safari company in South Africa and by the late 70’s employed 12 professional hunters hunting in numerous concessions in South Africa, Botswana and the then Southern Rhodesia.

In 1981, CVS disposed of its interests in SAPH and continued to expand within Southern Africa. Having a large client base and an impeccable international reputation, CVS co-operated successfully with other outfitters in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania as well as with Kgama Safaris in South Africa when it was first formed. This enabled CVS to be among the first outfitters to conduct safaris in National Parks.

CVS is based in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal and is managed by Coenraad’s son Hans (Scruff) and his daughter Eileen (Wikkie) and has a large staff compliment enabling CVS to conduct several safaris at the same time. Presently it has access to many concession areas in South Africa including the best National Park and Provincial Game Reserve areas.

In 2005 CVS acquired its own concession called Sankuyu in Botswana as well as other concessions along the Limpopo River and now Zimbabwe and Tanzania as well enhancing its offerings in particular for trophy elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile and plains game. CVS’s success rate for quality trophies is legendary - the record books speak for themselves! CVS is also very active in the international tourism industry which excludes professional hunting.

To accommodate this expansion a separate division known as Coenraad Vermaak African Adventures was formed in 1996 to cater for the non hunting international tourist as well as those hunters and their families who wished to explore more of Southern Africa before or after their hunting safaris.

In addition to this, CVS’s sister company Dark Continent Video Productions, with their professional team of videographers and editors, film and produce top quality DVD’s of the safaris, complete with sunsets, campfires, music and special effects, allowing clients to relive those special moments time and again.

The exclusive hunting safaris which CVS offers are carefully tailored for discerning sportsmen. The professional hunters are all qualified and experienced and are full field members of PHASA. The CVS trackers are highly skilled and dedicated gentlemen and were the first trackers to be recognized as full field members of PHASA – a testimony to their skills and professionalism.
